ABOUT CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE ~~~Thom painted Cape Hatteras Lighthouse AFTER after it was moved 2900 feet to a new resting place 1600 feet from the Atlantic Ocean in 1999 to save it from an eroding shoreline. The nation's tallest brick lighthouse at about 208 feet, the Cape Hatteras Light Station had been deluged with ocean waves and threatened by inclement weather for such a long time that experts believed it would have succumbed to the ocean within the next decade had it not been relocated. ~~~U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR via NATIONAL PARK SERVICE executed the evolution of this major move. THE CAPE HATTERAS LIGHT STATION RELOCATION PROJECT NAMED OUTSTANDING CIVIL ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENT. "The relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a huge milestone in American history, demonstrating engineering ingenuity and technical skills of the USA." ~~The height of the structure, is listed at 208 feet, of which approximately 10 feet are underground. The focal height of the light beacon is 192.20 feet. It remains the nation's tallest masonry lighthouse.
